On March 5, the DPJ Next Cabinet held a cabinet meeting in the Diet building and approved the appointment of the Next Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and the establishment of a DPJ Policy Research Committee on National Security. Subsequently, Next Minister for Cabinet Office Takeaki Matsumoto will concurrently take the helm as Next Minister for SMEs. This position has been established by the Next Cabinet as a resolute response to the challenges faced by SMEs, such as the rising costs of imports like oil and wheat due to the weakening yen. Vice President Toshimi Kitazawa will be appointed as Chair of the DPJ Policy Research Committee on National Security.

The Next Cabinet also received a report regarding the schedule for the delivery of the FY2013 annual budget. Relevant subcommittees of the DPJ Policy Research Committee will review the budget and identify points of argument, and then the DPJ will develop its own budget proposal in preparation for a motion to revise the annual budget in the House of Representatives and an amendment bill in the House of Councillors. The DPJ will present its budget proposal at a meeting of the opposition party Policy Research Committee Chairs on March 13 and will work with other opposition parties to realize feasible points.
