On June 4, the Chair of the DPJ Policy Research Committee, Mitsuru Sakurai, and the Chair of Your Party’s Policy Research Council Keiichiro Asao met inside the Diet and agreed on the joint submission of seven legislative proposals concerning administrative reform, some to be submitted in conjunction with other opposition parties.
Following the meeting, Sakurai and Asao held a joint press conference, along with those from both parties responsible for the legislation on the working level. Sakurai commented, “Last year, we faced off as ruling and opposition parties, but now the DPJ is also in opposition, and the opposition parties have engaged in policy working level discussions and those proposals on which we have been able to reach a certain level of agreement are to be submitted as joint proposals. It goes without saying that the most important point is that administrative reform continues to be properly carried out. The Abe administration has not submitted even one piece of administrative reform legislation to the Diet, but we are intending to continue with promote such reform in a concrete way.” Among the proposed legislation is
a revision of the Special Accounts Law which stipulates the abolition of the special account for social infrastructure improvement. Sakurai described the aim of this revision, saying, “When it comes to the use of funds, the DPJ would like to enhance social security somewhat, and considering that we are faced with the extreme aging of society, Your Party is also in agreement with us on this matter.”
