On June 1, DPJ Policy Research Committee Chair Mitsuru Sakurai participated in a study session for local assembly members organized by DPJ Ibaraki, and discussed the policy content being considered for the manifesto for the House of Councillors election.

Twenty local assembly members for Ibaraki prefecture participated in the meeting, along with Yukihisa Fujita, who is scheduled to run as a DPJ candidate in this summer’s election. After Sakurai had pointed out various issues regarding Abenomics and other economic policies being implemented by the Abe administration and introduced the policy measures implemented by past DPJ administrations, discussion of individual policy issues took place.

Participants asked many questions such as “Free trade, such as that under the TPP, is of course important, but in rural areas people are worried about the impact on agriculture. How will the party deal with this?”, “What is your opinion regarding the issue of the collective right to self-defence?”, “Increases in the employment of irregular workers by local authorities are increasing the numbers of working poor in the region.”, “How are you going to promote the manifesto policies to the people?”. Sakurai replied, “The current diplomatic negotiations being undertaken by the Abe administration are highly likely to damage our national interest, and I would like us as a party to make thorough efforts in preparing policies directed toward invigorating agriculture, in order to prevent [such negotiations] having a great impact upon rural areas.” Sakurai and other members of the Policy Research Committee executive are planning to hold similar discussions regarding the manifesto prior to the start of the House of Councillors election campaign, at various venues around the nation.
