On July 21, the DPJ candidate for the Hiroshima district seat, Shinji Morimoto, was elected to the Diet for the first time.

Morimoto, surrounded by around 80 supporters, watched the screen as news of election results came in. As news broadcasts reported he was certain to be elected his expression changed from nervous anticipation to a broad grin. He celebrated with supporters amidst cheers and rounds of applause.

At a speech following the news confirming his election Morimoto said, “I had no name recognition, and to be honest I myself wondered at first about the outcome, but my colleagues, supporters and the networks and organizations kind enough to back me moved mountains, and although it was a close race, the result is one that we can all rejoice in.” He went on, “I would like to make every effort to realize the pledges I made during the campaign. I will provide thorough support to those workers currently in employment, to those fathers and mothers striving to bring up children, and so revitalize Japan.”
