On August 19, DPJ President Banri Kaieda held his regular press conference at party headquarters. He commented, “August is a month during which we should think about peace. I have also been thinking about peace and friendship in Asia. References to regret for the past war were omitted from Prime Minister Abe’s speech at the annual ceremony for the war dead on August 15. The Prime Minister should clearly explain the reason for this. Another issue is that leadership summits have not been realised with China and the Republic of Korea.”
Kaieda continued, “It is 50 years since the Elysee Treaty was enacted between France and Germany. This treaty states that the two nations, who had engaged in open hostilities during the course of two world wars, would hold periodic leadership summits, meetings of cabinet members and youth exchanges. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and the People’s Republic of China, and I believe that it would be meaningful to make a proposal for Japan and China and Japan and the Republic of Korea to [engage in such periodic exchanges]. Former Chongqing Consul General Kiyomi Seno has made similar remarks.”
