On September 10, DPJ President Banri Kaieda held his regular press conference at party headquarters. He announced that the new party leadership lineup had been officially launched in meetings of the Executive Committee and Standing Officers Council held the same day.
Kaieda commented on the selection of Tokyo as the venue for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, saying, " I would like to express my appreciation for the efforts made by the Tokyo Metropolitan government and by the Bid Committee, and above all for the support shown by so many of the people of Japan." However, he also criticized comments made by Prime Minister Abe during the final presentation to the IOC and in response to questions regarding leaks of contaminated water at Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant. The Prime Minister had stated that "Let me assure you that the situation is under control" and "The contaminated water has been contained in an area of the harbour only 0.3 square kilometres big [sic]". Kaieda said, "It is important to keep the world informed, but [the Prime Minister] should also provide the Japanese people with accurate information regarding the contaminated water, and demonstrate the government's clear resolution."
He went on, "There is a possibility that contaminated water has leaked outside of the harbour. I would like to discuss this matter thoroughly in the Diet and hear the grounds for the Prime Minister's statement."
