On September 13, DPJ President Banri Kaieda met with Mongolian Prime Minister Norov Altankhuyag at a Tokyo hotel.

At the start of the meeting, Kaieda said, "I hear that Your Excellency visited Japan 20 years ago, but both our countries have changed dramatically since then. Mongolia has attained democracy, and our two nations now have a complementary relationship. In particular, we are extremely appreciative regarding [Mongolian assistance] for natural resources and rare earth. We would like to further deepen our friendly relations with Mongolia from now on. Since Your Excellency is also the leader of the [New] Democratic Party, I feel a great sense of kinship with you."

Prime Minister Altankhuyag commented, "In Mongolia we have just completed a two-year electoral cycle, with the New Democratic Party gaining a majority in each election. During the coming three years we have an environment where we can focus on development. There are many things that we can learn from Japan, and so I hope that we can continue to cooperate in future."

Following this, discussions on a variety of issues, including the friendly relationship between Japan and Mongolia and the deepening of bilateral exchanges, took place in a convivial atmosphere. The meeting was also attended by Secretary General Akihiro Ohata, Executive Office Director-General Satoshi Arai, Administration Committee Chair Shoichi Kondo and former member of the House of Representatives Tsuyoshi Saito.
