On September 18, DPJ President Banri Kaieda met with Korean ambassador to Japan Lee Byung-kee at party headquarters.
At the start of the meeting, Lee said, “People are saying that relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea are extremely unstable. I would be grateful if Diet members could visit the ROK and work to stabilize the relationship.” Kaieda explained that a DPJ delegation led by Acting President Yoshiaki Takaki would be dispatched to Korea and commented, “In order to make the bilateral relationship a friendly one, it is important for us to engage in frequent comings and goings.”
Kaieda also called for the import ban on Japanese marine products implemented by the ROK following the leaks of contaminated water from Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, to be lifted as soon as possible.
The meeting was also attended by Acting President Takaki, Acting Secretary General Masaharu Nakagawa, Executive Office Director General Satoshi Arai and International Department Director General Kaname Tajima.
