On September 22 and 23, a DPJ delegation led by Acting President Yoshiaki Takaki visited Seoul, Republic of Korea (ROK) and met with Saenuri Party leader Hwang Woo-yea and National Assembly Speaker Kang Chang-hee.
At the start of the meeting, Takaki commented that there were many issues in Japan-ROK relations at present, but the ROK was Japan’s nearest neighbour, and friendly relations were important for the stability and development of Asia and the world. He stressed, “It is at just such a time that we can create bonds between our two countries by engaging in frequent exchanges between politicians and increasing the opportunities for frank discussions.” Takaki also referred to the import restrictions imposed by the ROK on Japanese marine products, once more urging the Korean side to take decisions based on the scientific evidence available.
Following the meetings, Takaki commented to reporters regarding the purpose of the visit, “There are many outstanding issues in the Japan-ROK relationship, and as an opposition party we can’t just sit back and do nothing.” Regarding the marine products issue, he said that in the ROK consumer fears about contamination have led to them shunning not just Japanese marine produce but also that of Korean origin. He went on to say that the two sides had confirmed the need to devise ways of communicating the facts to their respective citizens in an effective manner.
In addition to Takaki, the DPJ delegation comprised of Secretary General Akihiro Ohata, Acting Secretary General Masaharu Nakagawa, and International Department Director General Kaname Tajima.
