On November 19, DPJ President Banri Kaieda visited the Ambassador of the Philippines Manuel M. Lopez to express his condolences for the devastation caused by typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) which had struck the central islands of the Philippines. Kaieda passed over a donation of 2 million yen from the DPJ. He was accompanied by International Department Director-General Kaname Tajima.

Kaieda stated, "I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to those who have been affected by this disaster and to the bereaved families. This donation is just a small token from the DPJ, but we hope that it can be put to work to help many victims of the typhoon."

Following this, he once more conveyed his appreciation for the great support Japan received from the Philippines at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake. He said that Japan and the Philippines had enjoyed friendly relations for many years, and said that "Although the current circumstances were unfortunate, I hope that the amicable relationship between our two nations will continue."
Ambassador Lopez expressed his "grateful thanks" and said he hoped that such gestures would deepen the bonds between Filipinos and Japanese.
