On June 20, DPJ President Banri Kaieda answered reporters' questions following the end of the 186th ordinary Diet session that same day.

Kaieda looked back over the session, saying, "I have the strong feeling that this is a Diet session that has ignored debate [in the Diet] from first to last, which means that it ignored the voices of the public." In particular, he highlighted the way in which the legislative proposal submitted by the ruling parties in order to regulate the involvement of the Diet in relation to the special secrets protection law had been forced through the House of Councillors on the last day of the session without sufficient discussion, and how despite the DPJ's calling for special committee's to be formed in the Diet in relation to the issues of the TPP and whether to approve the right to collective self-defence, such committees had not be formed, and the exercise of the right to collective self-defence was shortly to be approved by the Cabinet without almost any discussion. He stated, "This is something which is unacceptable".

Kaieda went on to comment on the forthcoming discussions regarding the issue of collective defence in the DPJ's General Research Committee on Security, saying, "This is not something that can be postponed, and so a meeting will be held early next week, on Tuesday, and following this we will work intensively to create the party's position as soon as possible."
