On July 17, President Kaieda, arriving at Haneda Airport from China, spoke to reporters: “Though it was a short visit, we had frank exchanges of ideas with leading Chinese figures. I think it was very meaningful.”
Regarding the mechanism for maritime crisis management, Kaieda stated, “I told everyone I met with in China that the mechanism, including for airspace, should be started as soon as possible. Though we were not able to hear responses to my proposal, I repeatedly demanded that it be started as early as possible, so that sudden clashes are avoided. Furthermore, I stressed that it was important that the two sides hold meetings.”
As to the right to collective self-defense, Kaieda indicated, “The Chinese side believed that this was an issue of domestic Japanese politics, and I told them that I agreed. Now that I have heard the opinions of China on this issue, the DPJ will keep this in mind when questioning the Abe administration at the Diet.”
