On September 3, DPJ President Banri Kaieda responded to questions from the press regarding Abe’s reshuffled Cabinet lineup and the Liberal Democratic Party’s new executive members. Kaieda criticized, “I would like to name the reshuffled Cabinet ‘Cabinet pretending to be reshuffled.’ Six ministers remained in the Cabinet. Furthermore, the new ministers are well-known and lack freshness.”
Kaieda made remarks on the five new female ministers and expressed his concerns, stating, “Some of them have views that might deny women’s participation in society. I really doubt if this can be called promotion of women.”
Regarding the shake-up of DPJ executive members that was to be determined on the basis of the Cabinet reshuffle, Kaieda stated, “I would like to do it when the time is right. I will not take any lessons from the negative example set by Abe’s reshuffled Cabinet.”
When asked what he thought about the appointment of Sanae Takaichi as the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, who indicated that “hate speech” and “demonstrations in front of the Prime Minister’s Office opposing nuclear reactors” may be the same, Kaieda stated, “As I have mentioned, women should not be appointed ministers simply because they are women. We have to check what views they hold.”
