On October 21, the DPJ and the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (JTUC) held an executive-level meeting at party headquarters. The meeting was attended by DPJ President Banri Kaieda, Secretary General Yukio Edano and JTUC President Nobuaki Koga, as well as various other senior executive members from each side.

In his opening address Kaieda emphasized the DPJ’s intention of working toward scrapping proposed revision to the legislation governing irregular workers, stating, “Debate is scheduled to start shortly on the proposed revision to weaken the provisions of the Worker Dispatching Law, which has been ranked by the DPJ as the most important piece of legislation in this current Diet session. There are various significant problems with this legislation.” He also mentioned the JTUC’s current nationwide campaign to eliminate social inequalities, commenting, “You are currently engaging in a campaign which traverses Japan from north to south. The DPJ would like to extend back-up assistance for this.”

Edano reported that “The DPJ is engaging in policy debate in the Diet which focuses on issues relating to the lives and livelihoods of the Japanese people, by for example highlighting the way in which the side-effects of Abenomics have made people’s daily lives much harder; pointing out the problems with the proposed revision of the Worker Dispatching Law; and continuing to pursue the issue of collective self-defense. At the same time, we are also pursuing the issue of Cabinet ministers’ suitability. We will continue to attack the Abe administration from a variety of perspectives, and are also trying to encourage the other opposition parties to work together in a concerted fashion via our Diet Affairs Committee and Policy Research Committee.” Edano also referred to the party’s plans for forthcoming election campaigns, saying, “We are proceeding with preparations for next year’s nationwide local elections and the forthcoming national elections that will occur at some point in the future. Last week we held a meeting which was attended by representatives from each of the DPJ prefectural branches, and we will embark on tackling these various issues with a commitment that is shared at grassroots level across the nation.”
