On November 6 and 7, DPJ Secretary General Yukio Edano and Policy Research Committee Chair Tetsuro Fukuyama travelled to the Republic of Korea (ROK), where they held discussions with senior figures from both the ruling Saenuri Party and the largest opposition party, the New Politics Alliance for Democracy, regarding future party-to-party exchanges. The bilateral relationship between Japan and the ROK faces extremely difficult conditions at present, but it is essential for both nations and both peoples over the mid to long-term that political dialogue and exchanges be deepened. From this perspective, the DPJ has continued to engage in the promotion of party-to-party exchanges. This visit to the ROK follows an earlier one made by DPJ International Department Director-General Yukihisa Fujita and others in October, and aims to promote mutual understanding and communication between senior party leaders on both sides.

Edano and Fukuyama first visited Saenuri Party headquarters, where they met with Secretary General Lee Koon-Hyon. During the meeting, the two sides confirmed the importance of deepening party-to-party exchanges, and Lee stated that his party would positively consider taking concrete action on this. Discussions also took place on issues such as the recent developments in public opinion and public sentiment in each country vis-à-vis the other, the freedom of the press, and measures being taken to deal with hate speech. The meeting was also attended by Saenuri International Relations Committee Chair Kim Jong-Hoon.

Following this, the DPJ lawmakers met with New Politics Alliance for Democracy Floor Leader Woo Yoon-Kuen and other senior executives at the Floor Leader’s office inside the National Assembly Building. Edano spoke of his hopes of promoting party-to-party exchanges. In response Woo, in addition to welcoming the DPJ visit, made comments to the effect that while there had been various links between the two parties, and exchanges developed by individual politicians, he would like to work actively to create more stable and continuous party-to-party exchanges. The two parties confirmed their intention of working toward realizing concrete results in this area. The meeting was also attended by Secretary General Cho Jeong-Sik, Policy Committee Chair Baek Jae-Hyun and International Affairs Committee Chair Park Jeung. The Korean side commented there could be prospects for such exchanges taking place following the party convention scheduled to take place in February of 2015. The two sides also discussed public sentiment in both nations, the freedom of the press, and the measures being taken to deal with hate speech.
