On November 11, DPJ Secretary General Yukio Edano spoke to reporters at party headquarters, stating, “A general election could be called at any time. If this happens, the DPJ will not hesitate to bring the problems of the Abe administration to the attention of the people.”
Edano expressed his strong resolution, saying, “While it is basically possible for the House of Representatives to be dissolved early, it seems this would be dissolving the Lower House without just cause and purely for party interests in order to hide the problems and contradictions of the Abe administration. The DPJ will not hesitate to conduct a thorough campaign focusing on the problems of the administration.”
Asked about electoral cooperation and determining candidates for electoral districts where incumbent Diet members from different opposition parties co-exist , Edano told reporters: “There will be cases where we do not have enough time for all party Diet members to get together to discuss these matters, therefore they should be entrusted to DPJ President Banri Kaieda and other members of the party executive.” He went on, “As the largest opposition party, in order to be able to obtain a majority, we have obligation to run candidates in over the half of the electoral districts. Meanwhile, since we are discussing electoral cooperation with other opposition parties, it will not be an absolute must for us to fill all the electoral districts with our own candidates.”
