On December 2, the opening day of the official election campaign, DPJ President Banri Kaieda held his first rally in Iwaki city, Fukushima, together with the DPJ candidate for Fukushima No. 5 district, Izumi Yoshida. Kaieda expressed his resolution to proceed apace with the recovery of Fukushima. The rally was also attended by Japan Trade Union Confederation President Nobuaki Koga, who expressed his support.

Kaieda pointed out that there were two main issues with Prime Minister Abe’s decision to dissolve the Diet and call a general election. He said that these were (1) the administration’s attempts to conceal money politics scandals typified by the two female cabinet members who were forced to resign, and (2) attempts to cover up the failures of Abenomics.

Kaieda called on the assembled crowd to give their verdict on the failures of Abenomics, saying, “When you go to the polling station, I want you to consider whether your lives have actually got better during the two years of the Abe administration.” He pointed out that only large corporations and a handful of individuals had received benefits from Abenomics, and said that livelihoods in the regions were in a desperate state. He criticized comments of Abe’s that ignored the state of people’s lives, saying “Prime Minister Abe has totally ignored this situation, and has continued to say that Abenomics has improved the Japanese economy.”

Kaieda commented on the remark made by Prime Minister Abe that “We have created a million jobs.” Kaieda said, “The real situation is that most of these are irregular jobs and that in fact regular workers have decreased by 350,000.” He continued, “Stable employment creates stable income and leads to healthy consumption. This is the departure point for setting the Japanese economy on the path to a positive growth cycle.”

Kaieda also stressed, “The DPJ believes that the strengthening of the middle class is extremely important for Japan’s economic development,” and “investment in people is the DPJ’s most significant policy.” He went on to say, “Stable employment, childrearing assistance and ensuring a secure social security system are the DPJ’s policy pillars.”

Kaieda went on to explain that the implementation of the Act on the Protection of Specially Designated Secrets scheduled for December would have a serious impact on the lives of the nation. He criticized the Abe administration’s total stifling of debate on this issue, saying, “This law was forced through the Diet without the administration listening to the voice of the people or to the voice of the opposition parties. We cannot continue to permit such behavior.”

Kaieda also criticized the Abe administration’s failure to engage with the reconstruction effort in the disaster-affected areas in a forward-looking manner, and the movement to promote nuclear power policies, saying, “In this election, each of your votes will create an opportunity for us to change this direction. Now is the time to change the tide. With this in mind, we will fight the campaign until polling day on December 14.”
