At midnight on December 15, DPJ President Banri Kaieda held a press conference after the overall outcome of the snap election became clear. Kaieda commented on the result of the election, stating, “I thank everyone all over the country who supported the DPJ, despite a truly difficult campaign. Although the DPJ won more seats than before the election, I regret that we were not able to comply with people’s wishes for a reduction in the number of Diet seats filled by the ruling parties. The DPJ fought the election campaign with the message that Prime Minister Abe’s economic, foreign and security policies were extremely risky, but we did not succeed in thoroughly convincing the public of this.”
Kaieda also expressed the DPJ’s resolution to engage proactively in the forthcoming Diet debate and next spring’s unified local elections, saying, “As the largest opposition party, the DPJ will continue to ensure sufficient debate takes place in the Diet and to stop the Abe cabinet’s reckless politics. The DPJ is still in the process of rebuilding itself. Taking these things into account, we have to keep making steady efforts to win people’s trust.”
