DPJ leadership election campaign kicks off

On January 7, the election campaign to elect a new DPJ President began, with the following three Diet members declaring their candidacy:

Candidates (in the order of registration)
Akira NAGATSUMA
Goshi HOSONO
Katsuya OKADA

The election will take place through a combination of postal voting by 226,148 ordinary party members and supporters, and 1,629 DPJ local assembly members, and direct voting by 132 DPJ Diet members and one prospective party candidate for the next national election, to be held at an Extraordinary Party Convention scheduled for January18.

A total of 760 points is divided between the candidates. Ordinary party members and supporters account for 354 points, with a number of points distributed to each prefecture in accordance with the number of party members and supporters registered there. DPJ local assembly members are allocated 141 points nationwide. The points allotted to party members and supporters and to local assembly members are distributed to each candidate by the d'Hondt method according to a rate of votes obtained. The votes cast by party Diet members are worth two points each for a total of 264 points, while the vote of the prospective party candidate is worth 1 point.

In case none of the candidates is able to gain a majority of the points represented by the number of valid votes cast in the election, the DPJ will hold a run-off ballot. This will be decided through a direct vote by Diet members and the prospective candidate for the next election, the vote of each Diet party member being worth 2 points and that of the prospective candidate 1 point, for a grand total of 265 points. The winner is the candidate with the largest number of votes.
