On February 1, DPJ President Katsuya Okada released the following statement on behalf of the party after the DPJ convened a fourth meeting of the Information Liaison Committee on Japanese Citizens Held Captive in Syria at party headquarters:
●I was both profoundly saddened and deeply enraged at the news that Kenji Goto, who had been held hostage in Syria, has been murdered.
●It was with great sorrow that I heard Mr. Goto had met the same terrible fate as the other Japanese hostage Haruna Yukawa, and I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.
●The atrocities committed by the extremist terrorist organization ISIL (The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) are totally unforgivable. We vow that we will never tolerate any such acts of terrorism.
●We call on the Japanese government to do their utmost to ensure the safety of Japanese citizens.
●We need to investigate the response to this incident to ensure a similar event will never occur. In order to achieve this, I call on the government to disclose to the Japanese people as much information as is possible regarding the events of recent days.
