On February 21, DPJ Acting President Renho visited Hyogo prefecture, where she met with representatives of organizations based in the prefecture who promote measures to support victims of domestic violence and single mothers, as well as to combat poverty amongst women. She heard the financial difficulties they face in providing such support, and the importance of obtaining the understanding of local authorities. She also engaged in discussions on policies to help victims of domestic violence, as well as children and women’s policies in general, with local assembly members belonging to the DPJ Hyogo prefectural headquarters’ gender equality committee and prospective candidates for the forthcoming unified local elections.
Renho emphasized, “It is the DPJ who will support people who are experiencing domestic violence, and who cannot escape from violence and poverty. We will turn the spotlight on women who cannot even get a start in life, who want to work but are unable to do so, on children who are not included on a family register [and therefore lose legal entitlements and right to social security support], and on children who are experiencing abuse, and will continue to support them.”
