On July 4, DPJ President Katsuya Okada paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in a Tokyo hotel, who was currently on his visit to Japan.
At the outset of the meeting, Dung expressed his pleasure in meeting with Okada again for the first time since 2010, saying, “I very much appreciate the DPJ’s commitment to the development of Vietnam and of the friendly relationship between Vietnam and Japan in recent years.” Dung also stated that he hoped bilateral cooperation would be further strengthened under the Extensive Strategic Partnership.
Okada expressed his appreciation and stated “The Japan-Vietnam relationship made great strides when the DPJ was in power. I’m glad that the friendly relationship between the two sides has been maintained after the change of government [in December, 2012.] The importance of the ties between our two countries will grow even greater. I would like us to continue to cooperate closely.” The two sides also changed views on the situation in the South China Sea and other matters.
The meeting was also attended by both of the DPJ Acting Presidents Akira Nagatsuma and Renho.
