On September 17, DPJ President Katsuya Okada met with H.E. Dr. Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), on an official visit to Japan, at the State Guest House, Akasaka Palace.
At the start of the meeting Okada welcomed Trong’s visit to Japan. Trong thanked Okada for taking time from his busy schedule to meet with him and expressed his expectation for further developments in inter-party exchanges between the DPJ and the CPV, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding which had been signed prior to the meeting.
Okada commented on regional affairs such as the situation in the South China Sea. Trong underscored the importance of avoiding further complicating the situation there and of establishing a code of conduct, based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Okada went on to explain the DPJ’s basic position on the security legislation currently being discussed in the Diet and the current status of the Diet debate. At the end of the meeting the two sides agreed to promote party-to-party exchanges, as well as exchanges at various levels including those between the citizens of both nations.
Prior to the meeting between Okada and Trang, a signing ceremony for the MOU on inter-party exchanges was held. The document was signed by DPJ Administration Committee Chair Shunichi Mizuoka and CPV Commission for External Relations Chairman Hoang Binh Quan.
The meeting and signing ceremony were also attended by DPJ Executive Office Director General Yosuke Kondo and International Department Director General Yukihisa Fujita.
