Okada emphasizes DPJ “will ramp up our campaign”

On September 25, a General Meeting of DPJ Diet members was held at party headquarters.

At the start of the meeting, DPJ President Katsuya Okada commented on the fact that the security legislation the DPJ had wanted to have scrapped had been approved and enacted by the Diet. He said, “I apologize sincerely to the Japanese people for the DPJ’s lack of strength. But the real fight starts now. The legislation has been enacted, but it is extremely important to stop it being implemented. If we can gain a majority in the House of Councillors, it will not be possible for it to be approved by the Diet. If we can gain a majority in the House of Representatives we will at least be able to return the parts of the legislation that violate the Constitution to the drawing board. I want us to work hard with these concrete goals in mind.”

Okada also referred to the launch of discussions with the Japan Innovation Party toward cooperation in next year’s House of Councillors election, and the way in which the movement opposing the security legislation had spread spontaneously across the nation and through all age groups of the population, saying “Based on unprecedented cooperation between the opposition parties and the movement among the public, we must ramp up our campaign. There is less than one year to go until the House of Councillors election, and a general election could also be held at any time. In the House of Councillors election, the opposition parties must outnumber the ruling parties. Then a change of government can be achieved by winning a general election once more. We will bear these objectives firmly in mind, and work together to achieve them.”
