DPJ General Meeting approves new members of party executive

On October 13, a General Meeting of DPJ Diet members was convened at party headquarters. President Katsuya Okada submitted a proposal for a new executive line-up as stipulated in the relevant portion of the party regulations. The proposal was approved by a round of applause from the assembled members.

Okada explained, “This leadership reshuffle includes changes in the House of Councillors executive as well as aiming to reduce the burden placed upon those members of the upper house whose seats will be up for election in next year’s House of Councillors election. I have kept changes to a minimum and aimed to strengthen my leadership team.” The newly approved members of the party executive are as follows.

Chair, Financial Committee Makiko Kikuta
(Member of the House of Representatives)
Chair, Public Relations Committee Manabu Terata*
(Member of the House of Representatives)
*will continue to serve concurrently as Vice Secretary General
Chair, Corporate & External Relations Committee
Yuichiro Hata
(Member of the House of Councillors)

Next Minister of Justice (Responsible for Measures Relating to the Act on the Protection of Specially Designated Secrets)
Takako Suzuki
(Member of the House of Representatives)
Next Minister of Defense (Responsible for Collective Self-Defense Related Legislation)

(Member of the House of Representatives)
*will continue to serve concurrently as Deputy Chair, Policy Research Committee

Okada also announced that a new committee, the Economic Partnership Research Committee (tentative title) would be established, with member of the House of Representatives Motohisa Furukawa serving as Chair.

Next, the Chair of the DPJ Caucus in the House of Councillors, Akira Gunji, reported on the new members of the executive for the upper house caucus, stating that Toshio Ogawa had been appointed Secretary General and Toshiyuki Kato Chair of the Diet Affairs Committee.
