On February 19, DPJ President Katsuya Okada held his regular press conference at party headquarters. He expressed his views on the meeting between the leaders of the five opposition parties, held earlier that same day.

Okada reported that he had made the following four proposals at the meeting between the leaders of the DPJ, the Japanese Innovation Party, the Japanese Communist Party, the Social Democratic Party and the People’s Live Party: the five parties should (1) set a shared target of abolishing the security legislation and ensuring the withdrawal of the cabinet resolution permitting the use of the collective right to self-defense, (2) aim to overthrow the Abe administration, (3) force the current ruling parties and supporting forces into the minority in national elections, and (4) cooperate as much as possible in various situations including Diet affairs and national elections. Okada announced to the press that the five parties had all agreed to these proposals.

Okada commented on this agreement, saying, “We have confirmed that we will ensure the enactment of legislation scrapping the government’s security legislation, jointly submitted on February 19, and cooperate closely in the Diet and in elections. These are both extremely significant matters.”
