Statement on the agreement to form a new party

On February 26, DPJ President Katsuya Okada released the following statement.

● I would like today to mark a significant turning point in the direction of Japanese politics. The new party to be created by the merger between the Democratic Party of Japan and the Japan Innovation Party will become an important nucleus of opposition party consolidation.

● Many people have grave concerns and doubts about the politics of the Abe administration. The new party will be a receptacle for these feelings.

● During its time in power, the Democratic Party of Japan split apart. The parties forming the third force also split and reorganized. We have disappointed the Japanese people. With this deep regret in our hearts, we have concluded this agreement in the belief that this is our last chance and that we must ensure the success of the new party. We are strongly resolved to stop the out-of-control politics of the Abe administration and to realize a politics under which changes of government are possible.

● I would like to call on a broad spectrum of other opposition parties, parliamentary groups and individual Diet members to join together with us, provided that our philosophies and policies are in agreement. I envisage that this could take various forms such as joining the new party or cooperating with it.

● We will move forward using the impetus provided by the recent five-party agreement (for the five opposition parties to cooperate as far as possible in all possible areas including Diet affairs and national elections) and the formation of this new party, and confront the Abe administration directly. We will ensure that we respond to the expectations of the Japanese people.
