On March 23, a General Meeting of DPJ Diet members was held at party headquarters, and formerly approved a proposal comprising the new party name, platform and regulations for the new party that is to be formed by Diet members from the DPJ, JIP and Vision of Reform, the proposal to be submitted to an inaugural convention for the new party on March 27. The new party is to be called 民進党 (Minshinto) in Japanese and The Democratic Party [DP] in English.
DPJ President Katsuya Okada expressed his appreciation, saying the fact that preparations for forming the new party had been completed successfully in only a month was “thanks to the cooperation that we have received from all of you individual Diet members”. He went on to say that the new party aimed to “become a mainstream political party that is capable of taking the place that the LDP occupies in Japanese politics, and I would like to ensure that this inaugural convention is a success in order that we can reach this goal.”
Secretary General Yukio Edano submitted as a single proposal for (1) a new party name, (2) new party platform and (3) new party regulations that were the fruits of discussions in four more informal discussions of all DPJ Diet members. The Chair of the General Meeting of DPJ Diet members, Masayuki Naoshima, put the Secretary General proposal to a vote and it was approved unanimously.
